Lesson 5 on the flu was full of great information. The timing is perfect.

  • Richard says:

    Fantastic info,Great,Thanks Much

  • Steve Ramsey says:

Thanks David, you obviously care about what you do, about helping other people. We know you’re not getting rich from this. I wish you were, but there’s riches in life more important than money. This you will reap. May God bless you and your family!

  • Thomas Heggen,MD says:

    David,
Great job on all the lessons to date. I took issue with one part of lesson five. I would be reluctant to have people stop their antacid regimens, your comments on pneumonia being noted. I think your comments about stress on the immune system are valid regarding the genesis of preumonia. I do not personally believe that reducing acid in the stomach causes lung infections. Rather, I believe that the gastric reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus (swallowing tube), the same reason the people need to take the antacid regimens, is probably related to causing lung irritation and creating a susceptible environment for infection, if not carrying bacteria from the gut to near the trachea.
ie just because two things are related in time, does not mean that one causes the other. (eg my street lights come on at dusk each evening, but I do not believe they cause the subsequent darkness) And I do not believe reducing stomach acid causes lung infection, but rather, the REFLUX that causes the person to need antacids, is probably more causally related to the genesis of lung infection.
In any case, the consequence of stopping antacid regimens can be the development of Barrett’s esophagitis and bleeding ulcers, both of which have an extremely high mortality. Also, once Barrett’s esophagitis develops, it cannot be reversed, so the person will have to undergo endoscopy every 3-6 months for life to lookout for esophageal cancer. Even detected early, esophageal cancer is usually deadly, and requires horrible treatment to try to control.
Pneumonia, on the other hand, while very dangerous in the elderly and very young, is a highly treatable and curable disease. (viral pneumonia may be a different animal, but like you said, the transmission is aerosol, and has nothing to do with stomach acid)
My advice, do not stop your antacid regimen unless your doctor telss you to, because you could die of esophageal cancer.

Also, be careful about using any zinc nasally. I think all the products are off the market now, but the FDA has reports of permanent loss of smell in about 135 people due to nasal zinc. some people might have it in their medicine cabinets still) Loss of smell can be deadly too (unable to detect gas leaks, spoiled food, etc)

    Keep up the great work!!!!!!!
    Tom

  • Benjamin Peacock, C.R.N.A. says:

    David,
The statistics about the higher incidence of pneumomia in persons taking Prevacid, Nexium, etc. may reflect the severity of the reflux and aspiration of acid in their sleep, rather than a cause/effect of the medication. In addition to the conditions mentioned by Dr. Tom, severe reflux and aspiration is a significant contributing factor to airway irritability (asthma, etc.). If societal breakdown occurs, we may not be able to obtain medications of any sort. There are those who swear that a tablespoon of apple vinegar once or twice a day has reduced or stopped their reflux.

  • Jim Jarvis says:

    David,
You are right on with the natural alternative approach to taking care of yourself.
I am a 73 year old male who takes NO medication including aspirin. I have practiced this approach for many years and expect to continue for a long time to come. I firmly believe that I know best how to take care of my body.
Your mention of the sunshine reminds me that several months ago my wife was sick so I convinced her to sit in the sun for 15 minutes a day and believe it or not she got well a lot faster. Shortly after that the medical establishment suddenly discovered the benefits of sun exposure and were suddenly telling people of their wonderful discovery. Guess they know it all.
Look forward to more of your lessons.
Another thing that helps the immune system without any side effects except for jumping out of bed like a twenty year old after several months of taking it is vinegar and honey drunk once or twice a day.

  • Ronnie Bowen says:

Any info that helps us become less likely to be monitored by big brother is good the less I have to deal with him the happer I/we are.
My wife and I are into forgeing and herbalism, goat milk, yogurt, cheese, and creamlye soaps. The two milk goats produce milk 10mo. of the year so this is good milk freezes will, just remember to allow for expansion when freezing.the more prepared & selfreliant we are the better we all will be.Also baking soda and water works well for acid reflux, along with cutting down of coffee and sodas.Baking soda & water also will clean the acid off your car battery.

David, this information is worth its weight in gold. You are right, lots of people do go to see the doctor and pays lots of money. Natural pants have lots to provide, but knowing which plants to use and for what. I’ll look into other resources you have provided. Thank you David for this info too.

  • Dwight Cochran says:

    Dave,
Great information, by and large, but those of us who practice medicine may take issue with some of the commentary, more especially re: antacids, BUT one thing those of us who deal with infectious disease do when the antivirals are in short supply is use Oscillococcinum (a homeopathic remedy readily available at the pharmacy) 1 capsule 3 times a day sublingually using the 6 day (18 cap) pack and elderberry syrup (e.g. Sambucol) at 1-2 teaspoonfuls atleast 4 times a day…if I have a viral episode coming on it will knock it (in me) after 4 days on this combination. That way I’m not out of the office and can still continue seeing patients. The comments about vitamin D3 are important information as well as your other common sense tips for reducing the possibility of contact with viral or other common contagion. Alternative or complementary use of herbs, nutriceuticals can all appropriate under a given set of circumstances. As a veterinarian I have one related recommendation: if you do develop a serious bout with influenza, try to keep from handling your pets, their food bowls and water dishes if you haven’t used an ethyl alcohol hand wash, so they don’t act as a physical means of sharing the “bugs” with other pets or the rest of the family. H1N1 can infect pets and some livestock under the right set of circumstances, so just be aware.Keep up the good work.

I have various health issues and a large streak of rebelliousness when it comes to the new chemical pharmaceutical stuff. This was interesting. I already use/do some of the things that you recommended and will look into the others. It would probably do me good to talk to Dr. Mercola. I have used his website as a resource for several years. I am enjoying the course as I have been trying to get organized. I am looking forward to the rest of the lessons.

  • William says:

    Sir
I enjoyed this lesson. My wife is hispanic and already has much of this on hand. As an advanced trained RN I find it interesting she finds most faith in home remadies. I also wanted to mention (LDM100) may help in a flue outbrake. I have researched it a bit and there are indian tribes who were unaffected by the flu. A DR> Krebs researched this and belives it is because of a natural cure they used nowdays called LDM100.

  • Diddydumdiddy says:

For the most part, this was informative. However, as a prep I wish specific dietary foods and drinks were mentioned; and methods for controlling fevers. For example, although flu is typically an upper respiratory infection, secondary infections like GI disorders are common. Not to mention sick people don’t feel like eating, but need nourishment. The last thing I want to do in a pandemic is have a dehydrated person on my hands. I want to stay out and away from populations of sick folks at all costs! Especially if the scenario includes triage centers set up because of overloaded medical facilities. One of the primary inclusions in my “sick preps” are ingedients for Oral Rehydration Solution: ORS. http://rehydrate.org/solutions/homemade.htm Additionally, I have a spot specifically for sick foods: chicken rice soup, broth, applesauce, bland foods, etc. Knowing how to reduce a fever is paramount!

I would also like to comment on Vit D3 cholecalciferol:
Simple blood test is all that’s needed to find out your vitamin D level. Several years ago, a range of 20-100 ng/ml was considered normal. Just recently, this range was raised to 32-100 ng/ml. Make sure to ask your healthcare provider what your actual vitamin D level is. Too often women are told that their levels are normal, which is not the same as optimal.
If you’re deficient, the best way to boost your vitamin D quickly is to supplement with vitamin D-3. Initially, you may need to take 5,000 IUs per day. After establishing a healthy level, I recommend supplementing with 1,000-2,000 IUs per day–it’s hard to get all you need from food. Some healthy fish provides 300-700 IUs, but milk only provides 100 IUs per glass.”

•regularly receive midday sun exposure in the late spring, summer, and early fall, exposing as much of the skin as possible for 20–30 minutes (being careful to never burn). (Those with dark skin will need longer exposure time — up to six times longer.)
•take 5,000 IU per day for 2–3 months, then obtain a 25-hydroxyvitamin D test. Adjust your dosage so that blood levels are between 50–80 ng/mL (or 125–200 nM/L) year-round.
Vitamin D has co-factors that the body needs in order to utilize vitamin D properly. They are:
    •magnesium
    •zinc
    •vitamin K2
    •boron
•a tiny amount of vitamin A
Magnesium is the most important of these co-factors. In fact, it is common for rising vitamin D levels to exacerbate an underlying magnesium deficiency. If one is having problems supplementing with vitamin D, a magnesium deficiency could be the reason why.
Read more about vitamin D’s co-factors: (more info on D3 testing also) http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/newsletter/more-vitamin-d-questions-and-answers.shtml
*Where you live also matters in obtaining adequate D3 from sunlight. I can’t remember, and I am sorry but I don’t have the time right now to look for it, but I believe it is something like above 40 degrees latitude you can’t obtain sufficient sunlight. *
And… Fish oils, specifically cod liver oil are good Vit D3 sources.
DAVE: I am enjoying and benefitting from the course!!

As a person who had severe acid reflux for more years than I’d like to admit, I don’t agree with antacids as they supress the acids & the reason for reflux is People are not swallowing enough digeative juices {spit} to take care of the problem. I got off all antacids by using Natural Apple Cider Vinagar & water,it took about two weeks to get the results I needed. Every time I had a flair I’d take a dose. After the 1st 30 days I was super & only use it now when I need it. I used a medicine cup off a Day Time Cold bottle, done a 50/50 & if I needed more water used it.
It also helps using vinagar mixed salad dressings too to help the system.
With better digestion I am eatting the foods I used to enjoy befor the acid reflux.
I use more home remedies now than I ever have & will continue to do so. as a result I am off prescription med’s. No I did not stop cold turkey I wheened off of 1 while incorporating the other over time.
I do strongly suggest Research on everything to get the results needed. Plus I use alot sites & get daily emails. mercola.com & naturalnews.com are great sites & theye will answer questions free.
Changing bad eating habits does wonders in getting the body back in balance. I don’t denye myself all treats but I make it a point in earning them so I can smile at the end of the day.
So don’t jump the gun on thinking you can get off all med’s some may not beable too, I was 1 of the lucky 1′s who could. My Dad used bakig soda & water for his acid reflux {1tsp w/half cup water}but he was getting to be a fan of the vinagar & water.
Dill pickles are also good to get the juices flowing. I keep a jar handy & when I need a boost I eat a slice & go.
Hope I have helped. Good Health too all.

Dave thank you for your time & caring of others.Keep up the superb work.

I have had several medical issues in my life. In the end, one thing found was I was deficient in D3. That is very interesting since I spend most of my day hours outside. I believe that there is something blocking D3 intake in some people, especially women. Possibly medication, hormones, ???. I now take D3 almost daily as well as cod liver oil daily, even though I go outside.I would check your levels to be sure.
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. So unprepared!

  • Loren D. Waite says:

What a lesson!!! I was taking handfulls of anti-acids for years and radically changed my diet, vitamins and exercise 10 years ago to eliminate taking them. I used to get sick often but since then my colds have been almost zero and no FLU. Now I can understand the relationship the anti-acids have on your body. Thanks David

  • Bob says:

Good info, as always! As David, I’m a fan of Garden of Life’s Primal Defense probiotic. I used it to clear an intestinal infection after an appendectomy and it cleared it in 3 days flat!

However, Garden of Life has a new probiotic supplement out called Raw Probiotics, and I like that in many ways even above Primal Defense. Primal Defense has 12 different probiotic strains and 15 billion live cells per dose. Raw Probiotics has between 31 and 33 different strains (depending on which version you get – mens, womens, men over 50, etc – it’s tailored to each sex and age group) and each dose has 85 billion live cells guaranteed alive at the time of purchase (most other companies merely state the number alive at the time of manufacture, and may contain no live cells by the time you take it, making it worthless). The Raw Probiotics also contains raw whole food vitamins. Overall, it’s the best probiotic on the market.

On the subject of zinc, most people are deficient. The best way to determine this is to buy a bottle of Zinc Status by Ethical Nutrients. It’s a liquid, and you basically take 2 tsp and swish it around in your mouth. If you immediately taste a metallic taste (similar to having a coin in your mouth), then your zinc stores are fine. If, however, you do NOT taste anything, or if the metallic taste is mild and slow to develop, then you need zinc supplementation. The great thing about it is that the Zinc Status is both the test and the cure…it’s zinc sulfate, and you test each day until you get an immediate metallic taste. It tests your zinc levels and builds up your zinc levels at the same time. What could be easier? You can get a 4 oz. bottle online at various stores for about $15.

Two people in our group have hypothyroidism and are dependent on medication to keep their levels in normal range. Been looking for a medication replacement in case of a TEOTWAWKI situation. Can anyone point me in a good direction?

    Thanks.

  • Mrs. T says:

For Hypothyroidism, please check out http://www.wilsonssyndrome.com/. Used the protocol for my daughter. It works!

For the flu, I make Dr. Schulze’s Super Tonic thus:
1 part fresh chopped garlic cloves
1 part fresh chopped white onions
1 part fresh grated ginger root
1 part fresh grated horseradish root
1 part fresh chopped cayenne peppers, hottest available.
Fill a glass jar (I used a gallon jar) 3/4 full with equal parts of all the above. Fill to the top with raw unfiltered unbleached, non-distilled apple cider vinegar.
Close and shake vigourously, top off with vinegar if necessary. Begin this concotion on the NEW moon and strain on the FULL moon, 14 days. Shake it every time you walk by it. Filter through a clean piece of cotton, bottle and label.
Dosage: 1/2 to 1 oz, two or more times daily, gargle and swallow. His patients swear it not only cures the common cold but every other disease of mankind!

If you don’t want to make your own, visit http://herbdoc.com. I have had this tonic around for years, shared with many people, and it works wonders when someone gets sick.

I really enjoyed this lesson! It’s great to know there are so many other folks out there that feel the same as i do about drugs & supplements!I had a quadruple by-pass when i was 40 years old. I am now 61,and have had 2 stints since my by-pass. I also have diabetis, copd, sleep apnea& ptsd.I almost died from 2 seperate G.I. bleeds, withen 5 months!!
it took a total of 12 pints of blood to save my life! It was caused by plavix & aspiren. When i got home from the hospital,i got off as many drugs as possible! I take supplements by the handful, including nattokinase to keep my blood nice & thin, fish oil, garlic oil, ginko biloba, and many, more.I take EPICOR daily & no cold or flu for three years thanks,Dave-great lesson!! • Brock says:

I have been studying the immune system for over 5 years. If you ever start feeling “under the weather” or flu-like symptoms, here is what you need to do:

Take 1000 mg of Vitamin C twice daily (for 2 days)
Take 100 mg of Zinc with food (for 2 days)
Take 2000 IU of Vitamin D (for 2 days)
Drink 1 cup of green tea (for 2 days)
Go to sauna for 40 minutes (for 2 days)
    First night, sleep 9 hours
Drink 100 oz water (for 2 days)

By the end of the second day, you will feel MUCH better and be able to function normally again by the end of the second day. I have been forced to do this personally multiple times and it worked every time. I just so happened to come up with the list above on my own by luck :)

  • Adam says:

That was so interesting , and very relevant to people living in England as we have a higher population density than most of your states with maybe the exception of New York.
My partner has always been a fan of Lavender as an anti-viral, ani-septic, anti-fungal. It is also the only essential oil you can use direct in a non diluted form. WHat do others think of this?

  • Lynn says:

I also recommend stockpiling Oscillococcinum, a homeopathic bird flu remedy available in the cold and flu section of the grocery store or drug store. It is great for that first hint of coming down with something.

  • Kenzie says:

    Hi, David!!!

Thank you so much!!!! These lessons are amazing!! I really enjoyed this one because Herbal Remidies are a favorite hobbie of mine. I wanted to tell you to do some research on ” Cats Claw” This is also a very helpful herb when it comes to illness. I use it when I feel like I might be catching a cold or the flu and it hasent let me down yet!! Its not an herb that children however!!! It is also used to help CA patients during therapy to help their immune system. Please give it a look:} My family hasent been to the DR in years. My 6 yr old has never used an antibiotic (and hope she never has too) My 10 yr old hasnt since he was 4. I give my entire family Elderberry. ( I buy the concentrate from the health food staore and make it as juice as well. My kids love it and its better then any other juice I coud give them. I also give my kids a childrens blend of Echineaca and Astragulus. Cherry Bark is a great help if they feel like they are getting a sore throat as well. I read a study that Coloidal SILVER actually healed horses that had contracted the Westnile virus. Another good one is to simmer a garlic clove in pure olive oil until the oil is well infused. let it cool and put in an old childrens tylenol bottle with a dropper (or buy a bottle with a dropper) store this in the fridge and if your child gets and ear infection warm under hot water and place a few drops in the ear place a cottonball in the ear do this a few times a day. It works everytime!!! And there is this one…… My Gram would take an Aloe Plant and break off a piece and with a q-tip rub the gel into the back of our throats. It tastes awfull but it really did work. :} lol!!

    GOD BLESS YOU !!!

    Best wishes from ALASKA!!

  • Hey David,

Thanks for another great topic which provided a refresh on some information we already were aware of and some new info also. Just an FYI the Probiotics link at the top of that page is outdated or they removed that product from their site (or put it in a different spot. We look forward to next weeks topic. Thanks again!
