Terrorist Attacks and Pandemic Flu???

Flu season is ramping up and you’ve only got a few short weeks to get your preparations in order.  There are some VERY simple things you can do to drastically reduce your chances of contracting any strain of the flu.  I’ll tell you a few simple ones in just a minute.

First, what do terrorist attacks on schools and the flu have in common?

Last year, militant Islamic websites were suggesting multiple simultaneous attacks on schools.  They assumed that the FEAR caused by 5-10 attacks, regardless of the success or the number of fatalities would cause parents to take their kids out of school in massive numbers.  The result would be a huge drop in the workforce for as long as they could make people believe more attacks were coming.

To put it short, in addition to the loss of life and innocence, the economic cost would be devistating.

With pandemic swine flu, people are over-reacting to non-severe cases and the media is underplaying severe cases among otherwise healthy people to keep the general population from panicing.

Similar to the terrorist attacks, no matter how bad the actual effects of the virus are, most of the consequences of the flu virus becoming a pandemic will be the result of people taking action based on FEAR.

I’m of the school of thought that it would be GREAT if everyone in the country could catch the weakest strain of H1N1.  Right now, even people with the weakest strains are being quarantined, keeping people from catching it and developing antibodies that could protect them from the more aggressive strains.

As I discuss in the pandemic lesson in SurviveInPlace, the flu virus is relatively weak and gets killed very quickly by direct sunlight.  One of the reasons why the flu spreads more rapidly in the fall and winter is that people in the Northern Hemisphere start spending more time indoors.

This has a multitude of effects that I discuss in detail in the course, but one of them is that when people with the flu breathe or sneeze indoors, the sun can’t kill the virus in their spittle.  (By the way, the virus can stay airborne for 11-17 minutes after being sneezed)

If people keep reacting the way that they are now, it’s very likely that when the number of H1N1 cases start to spike this fall, we’ll either see school shutdowns or mass incidents of parents taking their kids out of school to keep them from getting the flu.  I understand this, but one of the consequences of this is a decrease in the workforce due to parents staying home…just like what the terrorists were trying to accomplish with their attacks.

This won’t be like when kids are home for holidays and breaks and go to movies, shopping, and other social activities.  When parents take their kids out of school to avoid the flu, they’ll likely avoid densily populated areas (warehouse stores, mass transit, sporting events, etc.) and probably won’t even do as much shopping as they normally would.

So, what can you do to prepare, regardless of how bad the flu season is?

Well, I want to tell you straight out that this is ALL speculation.  I don’t have a crystal ball.  Frankly, I pray that I’m wrong, and that H1N1 fizzles out and it doesn’t have any economic impact on the country.  That being said, the steps that you can take to prepare for it are very simple and fit in with the rest of the SurviveInPlace course:

1.  Have a reserve supply of food/water/herbal medicines on hand.  Ideally the same foods that you normally eat.  If you can, make it a point to stock up on 2-4 weeks of non-perishable food in the next few weeks.  This way, if you decide to self-quarantine, you will be all ready to go.

You should have these supplies in place anyhow, but if you you’re opposed to “hoarding”, keep this in mind:  If nothing happens with H1N1, you can eat up the food in December to free up money for Christmas.

2.  Carry hand sanitizer with alcohol and aloe.  Use it often, especially after opening doors, shaking hands, etc.  If you don’t use a sanitizer with moisturizer in it, you are very likely to develop micro cracks in your skin that will allow viruses and bacteria direct entry into your system.

3.  Wash your hands regularly throughout the day.

4.  Carry a pen to use rather than the “leashed” one at stores & your bank.

5.  Use a paper towel to shut off water & open doors in public restrooms.  Consider carrying an extra few for when you run into air dryers.  (Remember that less than 1/2 of men wash their hands after using the restroom.)

6.  Try to telecommute and/or explore ways of making money from home.

7.  Avoid touching your face unless you’ve just washed your hands.  Pay particular attention to your eyes, mouth, and nose.

And…a GREAT couple of tips from a fellow student (THANK YOU!).  I was able to verify them and want to share them with you:

1.  Drink tea or warm liquids every day.
2.  Gargle twice daily with salt water.
3.  Use saline spray or a neti pot to irrigate your nose, sinuses, and throat with salt water.

Why?  Because the H1N1 virus needs time in the back of your throat to reproduce enough to reach critical mass and overwhelm your immune system.  By using salt water and/or warm liquids, you can wash many of the virus particles out of the throat and into the stomach, where stomach acids will kill them Black Flag DEAD!

As a bonus, this approach is MUCH like getting an immunization.  Since there will be fewer active virus particles left, your immune system will have a chance to adapt and figure out how to kill the virus and increase your immunity.

    We took colloidal silver when my sister-in-law came down with H1N1 during the last outbreak. She spent 2 weeks on a respirator. No one else in the family got it thank god. We have been using it for years. I use to get bronchitis every winter but have been bronchitis free for 8 years since using c. silver. We make it ourselves now.

    We take a bunch of things since the Japan incident and before that when the H1N1 started a few years ago. So we are staying healthy by staying aware of news, articles and info on immediate medical concerns in our area. I too have taken colloidal silver and it really helped me out. But my friends and I have noticed that we all have a cough that has nothing to do with the flu. It’s just a slight irritation in the back of the throat so we are all keeping tabs on one another to see what’s up. There is no telling what is in our food, air or water. It’s just a dangerous time for our bodies…….we have to keep vigilant.

    I have a stock of Hydrosil Silver, MMS, tinctures, Vitamin D. When my brother had MRSA I used the MMS at the strength suggested in his apartment and made up the spray and sprayed everything, my car, furniture, bathroom, to sanitize. I would carry it with me and spray my hands and face. I use the silver also at home and especially when I travel, always. I eat to alkalize my body to keep me from getting sick. Xyitol nasal spray helps me when I start to get allergies or sinus issues. I keep my house stocked and have a solar generator, in case. The biggest thing DO NOT TAKE FLU or any shots offered. Thanks for the information, every bit is helpful.

    Thank-you for this info. I upped my vitamin D intake, as I had been quite low, and didn’t get any colds the year I did that. I got lazy about taking it last year and caught a bad cold.

    In 2009 my daughter, who was 15 got H1N1. It is one of the most horrible flu’s I have ever seen. My daughter’s temperature was very high. She also had extremely bad headaches (which started making her have hallucinations) as well as the cough that comes later on as the illness progresses. I had to take her into the emergency room two different times in one week. The major concern was that we could not get her temp. to come down and she became dehydrated. We had to do an ice bath to bring it down. One thing you need to know, is that when they get the fever and chills do not cover them with blankets. This drives the fever up. We also had to use Tylenol and Ibuoprofen simultaenously round the clock. This was the only way that we could keep the fever and pain down. We had to do this continuously for about a week or so. If you can catch this flu within the first day or two there is an anti-flu drug. I think that this did a lot of good even a few days after she had had the flu. To keep from spreading the flu we kept paper towels in the bathroom and kitchen and did not use regular towels when drying our hands. I also got lysol spray and kept the doorknobs and all counters and surfaces disinfected. Make sure to have plenty of tissues and have the flu victim use them when they cough or sneeze. My daughter and the rest of us tried to use the face masks too. Luckily, no one else in the family got the flu.

    This is great information that I will share with my family. I tell them not to get the flu shots and hopefully they will follow this advice and not get them this year. I thought I was pretty prepared but you have given me many ideas that I hadn’t thought of. Thank you, and also to the people who reply with ideas too.

    Hydrogen Peroxide is a first aid antiseptic and oral debriding agent that kills germs. Gargling will kill the germs in the mouth and back of the throat. Some people dip Q-tips into the solution and coat the entrance of their ears and nose to kill germs there.

    Also, don’t forget to sanitize phones. Especially if you use a public phone or share one at work. I used to work with truck drivers that drove in from around the country and they often used my office phone. Not once did I ever get sick, because I constantly sanitized my phone.

    Avoiding hospitals, churches, child care centers, schools and airports will probably reduce the incidence by 75%. Home schooling works. Unfortunately infected persons transmit before showing symptoms.

    Definitely take Vit D3 (not just Vit D – it’s synthetic and cannot
    be absorbed by the body). You also need exercise and a good nutrition based diet, good sleep and avoid large crowds if possible. Once your
    immune system is functioning optimally you will be able to handle anything
    that is thrown your way. DO NOT EAT JUNK FOOD, KEEP AWAY FROM SUGARS AND
    TOO MUCH RED MEAT. If you cannot get fresh fruits and vegetables during
    these months, use frozen instead of buying something that is brought over from thousands of miles away – by the time it gets here it’s lost any
    nutritional value it had. Good luck this winter, keep healty and safe

    I do oil pulling everyday. (putting a teaspoon of coconut oil in mouth and swish for 15-20 min.) This kills viruses and bacteria in the mouth before in goes into the body. It also detoxes you so your body can fight for it’s self. I stay away from wheat and refined foods.

    Worked 911 calls during the first outbreak where panic and common sense fought each other. People were calling us thinking that a “magic bullet” was available at the ER. Every symptomless person was packed into the waiting rooms after a $1,200 “taxi” ride so that if you WEREN’T sick, after a triaged wait of 10 hours you’ll probably catch something in those human petri dishes called ER waiting rooms.

    The problem with being over paranoid regarding germs is that you develop no resistance to them. The American Indians died in great numbers when the white man came to our shores because they had never been exposed to the same germs that the settlers were immune to. I am 68 years old and have not taken a flu shot in many years or used “hand sanitizers” or any of the draconian measures stated here. I keep my body strong with vigorous weight training. cardio and eat a balanced diet including red meat. I take no meds and have plenty of energy. One thing lacking in the survive in place tips is keeping your body in top condition. It won’t do much good to prepare for a disaster if you are weak and out of shape. Surviving in place during a disaster will be extremely stressful. A weak heart, high BP and other physical weakness can be the difference between living or dying. Survival may mean getting out of Dodge and leaving your car behind due to an EMP attack or clogged roads. Carrying a 30 to 40 pound back pack or maybe even carrying a small child much of the time will take it’s toll of the best. Many other situations can occur that may tax your fitness. The best chance to survive is to prepare AND get and stay in the best physical condition possible. Only the strong WILL survive.

    One of the best things we’ve done for our immune system health is to quit eating processed foods. I’ve found we all get sick a lot less in the last couple of years since I’ve been cooking REAL food!

    My remedy to germ avoidance is to keep my enviornment about 67 degrees or lower and if I feel cool I wear a sweater or warmer clothing.
    At the first sniffle I start taking Vitamin C every 2 hours to about 5000 mgm or more and hydrate myself with warm herbal drinks and homemade chicken soup from organic raised chicken plus lots of water .Best to go easy on fruit drinks due to their high sugar content. remember germs love sweet things so avoid the high carb foods until you feel better.
    Keeping the body slightly alkaline helps me every time.My favorites are bee pollen ,royal jelly, cayenne pepper, spirulina .

    I used to get a sore throat each winter followed by a cold and “bed time” for a few days. Someone told me to take a tables[poon of fresh garlic (chopped up) 3 times a day. You don’t need to chew it, just wash it down with a glass of water. Only 1 cold in the last 8 years because I didn’t follow my own advice!

    Using Thieves Oil in the winter can help kill germs before they get into your system. You can buy it at Amazon.com or make your own supply. There are recipes on the Internet. You can use it on your skin (diluted with carrier oil like Jojoba), and for all kinds of natural disinfectant uses. It also helps to clear up congestion so you get better sleep if you rubb it on your wrists and neck and can minimize the duration of colds and flu by rubbing on the soles of your feet before bedtime.

    I use black elderberry syrup every day, wash hands frequently, take vitamin d, use honey and cinnamon–have not had a cold or flu in over 8n years.

    An IV of a high dosage of Vit.C will knock just about anything. Check on the internet for a Dr. that will administer it. I take Vit. C every morning. I am 83 years old and do not take any meds and feel fine.
    I eat very litle sugar and grains.

    Ditto on Thieves and Colloidal Silver…I stockpile both. Another thing I stockpile is Oscillococcinum. You can find it at HEB in the cold remedy section. It is a homeopathic remedy to use at the first signs of flu illness. The box will say to use a whole vial at a time, but that is not necessary (they want to sell more!) a few pellets 2-3 times that day should stave off most illness. But still do the other smart immune builders as well preventively. Taking therapeutic mushroom remedies like Reishi and other herbal remedies can fortify your immune system as well.

    I am a big fan of vitamin D3 the sunshine vitamin.. Not vitamin D. You will notice when the cold and flu season starts is after the sun gets south where you don’t get benefits from it. Another thing I do is start my day spraying my eyes and body with colloidal Silver, I use it as a deodorant. I haven’t used a commercial deoderant for many years they have aluminum in them. I also use an empty saline nose sprayer and fill it half full of CS so you get a mist, and spray 2-3 squirts up ea. nostril breathing it into my lungs. I’ve done this for years and haven’t turned blue. I had to add this because I know some people think you can’t ingest CS without turning blue. When I’m ready for breakfast I start with 11 drops of 250,000 heat units of Cayenne pepper. Be sure to have a dairy product (I use cheese) to coat your mouth and throat before and after. After my bkfast and vitamins I’m ready for the day. I do carry a spray bottle of CS in my day bag, in case of cuts or to spray hands before eating (usually on the run), or for anything else that I might need it for.
